Louisa Wall

Board Chair

Louisa Hareruia Wall, born on February 17, 1972, is a prominent figure known for her impactful contributions to New Zealand’s political, sporting, and social landscapes. Her tenure as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the New Zealand Labour Party spanned from 2008 to 2022.

Grounded in Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Hineuru, and Waikato iwi affiliations, Wall’s upbringing in Waitahanui (Ngāti Tūtemohuta) Taupō, deeply shaped her sense of identity and purpose.

Her educational journey led her through Taupo-nui-a-Tia College and various institutions—Waikato Institute of Technology, University of Waikato, and Massey University—culminating in a Bachelor of Social Policy and Social Work, followed by a Master of Philosophy in Social Policy.

Wall’s career manifests her unwavering commitment to community health and human rights advocacy, notably within the Takatapui community. In politics, she ardently advocated for equality and dignity for all, championing numerous causes.

In the realm of sports, Wall’s achievements are exceptional. Beginning with the Silver Ferns at 17, she showcased her athletic prowess. Transitioning to rugby union with the Black Ferns in 1995, she played a pivotal role in their historic victory at the inaugural 1998 Women’s Rugby World Cup.

Her legacy extends beyond sports. Wall played a pivotal role in legalizing same-sex marriage in 2013, marking a significant human rights milestone in New Zealand. Her advocacy spans sexual and reproductive health rights, gender equality, and LGBTQIA+ rights, resulting in tangible legislative changes.

Transitioning from Parliament in March 2022, Wall assumed the vital role of Ambassador for Gender Equality (Pacific)/Tuia Tāngata within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, focusing on advocating gender equality and empowering diverse women and girls across the Pacific. Since August 2022, she has chaired Tūwharetoa IMPB, continuing her dedicated service.

Rev Jonathan Hirini Arapeta Te Rire (Hone)

Rev. Jonathan Hirini Arapeta Te Rire (Hone) was born on February 4, 1960, in Kawerau, within the burgeoning community of the Tasman Pulp & Paper Mill town. A proud descendant of Tūwharetoa-i-te-Aupouri, the eponymous ancestor of the Ngāti Tūwharetoa Iwi, Hone’s roots run deep into the ancestral marae of Hāhuru, nestled in Onepu, the heart of the traditional homelands of Ngāti Tūwharetoa.

Raised by iwi elders, Hone absorbed the rich heritage of whakapapa, history, waiata, mōteatea, and tauparapara of his hapū and iwi ancestors. His lineage traverses all his hapū within the recognized iwi boundaries from ‘Mai i Te Awa o te Atua ki Pūtauaki’.

Hone proudly represents the Tūwharetoa ki Kawerau hapū affiliations, including Ngāti Te Aotahi, Ngāti Pou, Ngāti Peehi, Ngāti Iramoko, Ngāti Umutahi, Ngāti Manuwhare, Ngāi Tamarangi, with close ties to Ngāti Tūwharetoa kin from Taupō – Ngāti Tūrangitukua and Ngāti Tiutetawha.

An integral part of his iwi’s growth, Hone actively contributes to the development of Tūwharetoa ki Kawerau marae, serving as a visible figure within the community. He has also spearheaded Marae Based Studies wānanga on Te Reo, Whakapapa, Whaikōrero, and Māori Leadership.

Beyond his cultural roles, Hone is a Nationally Ordained Minister of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa, New Zealand. His academic prowess includes achievements in LLB, Master of Management, Masters of Indigenous Studies, Postgraduate Diploma in Te Reo, Diploma in Christian Ministry, and most recently, a PhD in Māori Theology.

Dedicated to serving and representing the interests of his people, Hone remains a devoted servant to Ngāti Tūwharetoa, embodying their values and aspirations.

Dr Leanne Te Karu

Ngāti Rangi, Te Ati Haunui-a-Pāpārangi, Muaūpoko

Board Member

Dr. Leanne Te Karu proudly represents Ngati Rangi, Te Ati Haunui-A-Papaarangi, Muaupoko descent as the mātāwaka representative on the Board, showcasing an extensive spectrum of expertise within Aotearoa, New Zealand’s health and disability sector. Her comprehensive experience spans clinical practice, governance, research, strategy, and iwi development, excelling as a prescribing pharmacist in general practice, focusing on complex multimorbidity and unmet needs. Leanne ardently intertwines clinical excellence, cultural safety, and Indigenous knowledge to serve her community.

A trailblazer, Leanne holds the distinction of being Aotearoa’s first pharmacist prescriber. Her groundbreaking work extends beyond medical clinics into marae settings, collaborating with rongoā practitioners, including within the Waimarino amongst her whānau, to optimize medicine therapy. She champions medicines optimization, ensuring optimal use to alleviate illness impacts while mitigating drug-related harms.

As the current Associate Dean Māori for the School of Pharmacy Health Sciences at the University of Otago, Leanne plays a pivotal role in implementing the Māori Strategic Framework, fostering an environment of cultural integration and excellence.

Co-founder of Ngā Kaitiaki o Te Puna Rongoā o Aotearoa, the Māori Pharmacists Association, Leanne served as President for over a decade, championing culturally safe care for Māori within the pharmacy profession.

Acknowledged with the prestigious Pharmaceutical Society’s Gold Medal in 2021, an honor rarely bestowed, Leanne’s tireless dedication to improving health outcomes garnered recognition. Her exceptional contributions extend to various firsts, including receiving the Inaugural Award for Clinical Pharmacist of the Year and the Inaugural Primary Healthcare Pharmacist at the NZ Primary Healthcare Awards|He Tohu Mauri Ora.

Leanne’s commitment to improving Hauora encompasses diverse research endeavors, addressing gout, diabetes, pregnancy-related issues, and infections. She contributes to NZDoctor magazine, serves on New Zealand’s Medicines Adverse Reactions Committee, and holds an Honorary Senior Lecturer position at the University of Auckland’s Department of General Practice and Primary Health Care.

A staunch advocate for indigenous peoples, Leanne works tirelessly, fostering global relationships with Indigenous entities and contributing her expertise to the betterment of health systems from an overarching societal perspective, rooted in mātauranga.

Luke Rowe, a descendant of Ngāti Waewae and Ngāti Kurauia, boasts a dedicated background in Clinical Psychology and was previously based at the Research Centre for Hauora, Massey University. His diverse research pursuits encompass hauora, sports, and high performance, capturing the intricacies of indigenous wellbeing and the dynamics of excellence in sports. His recent accolade includes securing the prestigious Marsden Research Fund for He Awe Māpara: The intersections of indigenous imaginings, decolonisation, and mainstream sport for Māori, emphasizing a culturally Māori perspective.

In addition to his scholarly endeavors, Luke actively contributes his expertise to several high-performance teams such as The Hurricanes, Central Pulse, and Māori All Blacks. This hands-on involvement enables him to apply the knowledge garnered from his research directly into the practical realms of elite sports.

Luke’s commitment to unraveling the nexus between indigenous cultural perspectives, decolonization, and mainstream sports showcases his dedication to understanding the intricate connections between Māori heritage and contemporary sports dynamics. This intersectional research stands as a testament to his passion for fostering a deeper understanding of indigenous paradigms within the modern sports landscape.

Balancing his roles in academia and elite sports support, Luke embodies a commitment to bridging the gap between indigenous knowledge and its application in contemporary domains, striving to enhance both cultural appreciation and performance outcomes within the sports arena.
